A significant debate erupted in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday as the opposition party, the DMK, opposed Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s proposal to provide free official vehicles to all 234 MLAs. The DMK cited concerns over the state’s increasing debt burden as a primary reason for their rejection of the proposal. This disagreement highlights ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition regarding fiscal responsibility in the state.
State Government Allocates Vehicles and Allowance to MLAs
Chief Minister Vijay announced on Wednesday that the state government will provide official vehicles to all 234 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Each MLA will also receive a monthly allowance of Rs 1 lakh to cover maintenance, driver, and office-related expenses. Following this announcement, various car models, including Mahindra SUVs like the Scorpio and XUV 3XO, were made available at the Secretariat on Thursday for legislators to choose from.
Arjuna also launched a personal attack on the Leader of Opposition, questioning his decision to occupy government-provided accommodation. He also questioned the TVK-led government’s consistency, noting that the administration has repeatedly highlighted the state’s financial difficulties since assuming office. “The CM made the announcement treating all MLAs equally. If the LoP does not want a car, why is he staying in government quarters when he has three bungalows?” the Minister asked. Meanwhile, PMK MLA Ganesh Kumar proposed a middle ground, agreeing with the LoP that the government should assess the financial status of legislators before providing them with official vehicles. He challenged the TVK-led government’s consistency, pointing out that the administration has frequently highlighted the state’s financial distress since taking office.

He pointed out that several legislators from smaller parties, including the VCK and Communist parties, are financially constrained, and argued that official vehicles should not be viewed as a luxury but as a basic necessity for them to travel across their constituencies.
