A 72-year-old man, who had been on the run for nearly 15 years in connection with an extortion case, has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. The accused, identified as Hari Singh Shekhawat, a resident of Rajasthan’s Jaipur, had been declared a proclaimed offender by a court in 2016.
During the investigation, police found that he had initially shifted to Gujarat and later moved to Rajasthan in an attempt to avoid arrest and legal proceedings. After confirming his identity and residence, he was apprehended and arrested in accordance with the law.
Police said Shekhawat, a graduate of Xavier School of Management, formerly Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), had worked in senior positions with several multinational companies. The police said his arrest brings to an end a long interstate pursuit that involved tracing his movements across Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan.
The case dates back to 2008, when Hari Singh Shekhawat allegedly attempted to extort money from a garment multinational company he was employed at.
As he repeatedly failed to appear before the court and allegedly continued to evade legal proceedings, he was declared a proclaimed offender on April 2, 2016.
