A man stabbed his wife with a sharp weapon during a fight at their home in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri, then consumed pesticide and surrendered at a nearby police station this morning.

Jahangir Alam and his wife, Ruksana Begum, got into an argument over a personal issue around 6 am, during which the accused attacked Ruksana with a sharp weapon.

Hearing screams, the locals rushed to the spot. Subsequently, he was arrested. Family members and neighbours claimed that while their relationship appeared to be normal initially, fights between them had become frequent lately. The locals also alleged that Jahangir was addicted to some substances – which he consumed and created disturbances at home. He also used to assault his wife and threaten neighbours, they added. A police patrol team was deployed in the area to prevent any tension.

Jahangir soon consumed pesticide and went to the Dhupguri police station with the sharp weapon to surrender, according to locals. Police are investigating the exact motive behind the crime, officials said.
