The extended wait for a national team cap has concluded for Saransh Jain as the thirty three year old Madhya Pradesh all rounder steps onto the field for his debut against Sri Lanka in the second Test in Colombo on Sunday. Fellow teammate Ravindra Jadeja handed over the maiden cap during the morning huddle, marking a significant milestone that rewards years of relentless grinding across the Indian domestic circuit. The management brought him directly into the playing eleven to replace Kuldeep Yadav, who was forced to sit out due to an infection.
As a right arm off spinner who bats left handed, Jain has carved out a stellar reputation through consistent all round contributions. His initial call up to the Test squad for this Sri Lanka tour arrived after Washington Sundar suffered an injury setback. Even so, the debutant firmly believes his extensive domestic body of work had already placed him squarely in the national conversation. ‘My selection shows that the IPL alone is not the yardstick for making the cut. It is proof of the hard work I have put into domestic cricket. During two unofficial Tests played in Sri Lanka across June and July, he experienced a quiet start in the opener before delivering a match winning display in the second fixture by capturing six wickets alongside an unbeaten knock of 70 runs. ‘The just-concluded India A tour of Sri Lanka, where I picked up six wickets and scored an unbeaten 70, instilled confidence.
I would like to thank the selectors for showing faith in me,’ Jain told The Times of India after his call up. Two years back, the six-for against Mumbai in the Irani Trophy was another important milestone,’ he said.
Furthermore, his stellar output during the 2025 to 2026 Ranji Trophy season showcased his immense value to Madhya Pradesh. He topped the batting charts for his side by accumulating 518 runs across seven matches at an exceptional average of 57.55, featuring one hundred and three fifties. With the red ball in hand, he bagged 30 wickets at an average of 20.43, finishing just behind teammate Kumar Kartikeya, who led the team with 35 scalps, thereby cementing the consistency behind his selection.
