New Delhi: Thirty-six years after they were abducted and killed in south Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has reopened the murder case of Kashmiri Pandit teacher, poet and social worker Sarvanand Kaul ‘Premi’ and his son Virendra Kaul.
Police Investigate Militant Activity in Rajouri
This month, police conducted searches at multiple locations, including the residence of a suspected militant in Rajouri. The investigation focuses on determining whether additional individuals were involved in recent killings and uncovering the circumstances surrounding these deaths.
A Kashmiri Pandit family that chose to stay
The family was assured that the meeting would be brief and that he would return soon. The Premi family was the only Hindu family in Sof Shali and had decided to stay. His family also had close ties with Muslim neighbours. Residents recalled his help for poor families and his presence at the local Sufi shrine. He was known for supporting families facing financial difficulties, including helping with marriage expenses. Their house was later destroyed.
The case dates back to April 29, 1990, when masked gunmen arrived at Premi’s home in Sof Shali village in Anantnag district. By 1990, militant violence had led many Kashmiri Pandit families to leave the Valley. The family says the village temple was demolished in 1992 and their home was set on fire in 1998.
They told him that their “commander” wanted to meet him.
Family Seeks Justice Amidst Investigation Concerns
The family of the victim has expressed frustration over a lack of communication regarding the investigation’s progress. In response to these concerns, Rajinder Kaul has taken steps to escalate the matter by contacting the National Human Rights Commission and the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. He is seeking justice for his father’s case, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in the investigation process.
