Omprakash Lalta Pasi was a grumpy 18-year-old youth when he allegedly attacked and injured an umpire with a bat after being declared out during a cricket match in Mumbai’s Borivali area in 1990 and disappeared into thin air, perhaps thinking that he would never be traced.
A case was registered at Borivali police station under relevant sections of the now-scrapped Indian Penal Code (IPC). “Pasi kept changing his residential address and contact details to evade arrest. However, investigators continued efforts to trace him by gathering information about his movements and contacts.
The incident occurred in 1990, when Pasi, then 18, had gone to play a cricket match in Borivali.
“He was traced through a technical investigation and sustained efforts by Borivali Police,” an official said. “Enraged by the umpire’s decision to declare him out, Pasi allegedly attacked him with the cricket bat he was carrying, seriously injuring him, before fleeing the spot,” police said. After confirming his whereabouts, police arrested him at Poonam Residency in Mira Road (east) in Thane district,” the official said, adding that further investigation is underway.
During the proceedings, Pasi repeatedly failed to appear before the court, following which he was declared a proclaimed offender.
