India and Uzbekistan have officially upgraded their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This decision was made during delegation-level talks held on Sunday in Tashkent between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The enhancement of ties signifies a commitment to deeper cooperation in various sectors between the two nations.
Both the leaders announced that the two countries would establish a long-term arrangement for the supply of uranium. As part of efforts to give greater direction to bilateral ties, Modi announced the creation of a Coordination Council at the foreign minister level. Today, we are formalising three sister-city and sister-state arrangements.
The two leaders met at the Kuksaroy Presidential Palace and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation across several areas. “We will also establish a long-term arrangement for the supply of uranium. “We will establish a Coordination Council at the Foreign Minister level to provide direction to all aspects of our cooperation through close coordination. The Prime Minister welcomed President Mirziyoyev’s initiative to identify projects in key sectors to boost bilateral economic cooperation, along with a timeline for their implementation. “Mega-projects like ‘New Tashkent’ are underway in your country, while in India, we have developed GIFT City in Gujarat.
We should create a roadmap to fully realise their potential,” PM Modi said during the talks. We will elevate our Joint Commission from the Secretary level to the Ministerial level,” Modi said. We would be delighted to welcome a delegation from your country to study best practices and the use of technology in these developments,” he said. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X that Modi’s welcome reflected the “warmth and longstanding friendship” between India and Uzbekistan.
