On Tuesday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) submitted a charge sheet to the Rouse Avenue court involving six Ukrainian nationals and one US citizen. This action is part of a case initiated by the NIA in March 2026 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The details surrounding the charges have not been disclosed, but the case highlights ongoing concerns regarding unlawful activities linked to foreign nationals in India.
Arrests Made Over Alleged Support for Armed Groups in Myanmar
In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested seven individuals in connection with allegations of supporting ethnic armed groups in Myanmar. The arrested include three Ukrainian nationals from Delhi, three from Lucknow, and one US citizen from Kolkata. They were taken into custody in May 2026 and have remained detained for approximately 180 days.
On March 17, the NIA secured an 11-day custody order for the accused, arguing that they were involved in supplying weapons, terrorist hardware, and training to these groups. The agency has expressed concerns that the individuals may possess crucial information regarding their alleged interactions with unidentified terrorists who were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles.
The court, while granting custody, noted that the First Information Report (FIR) contained serious allegations related to activities that could threaten India’s national security and interests.
“The investigation in this regard is ongoing. The charge sheet was filed before Special NIA Judge Prashant Sharma, who has listed the matter for consideration on October 1.
The NIA may file a supplementary charge sheet if an offence is made out under UAPA,” the agency’s Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) said.
