Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to launch a bulldozer drive against illegal construction in several parts of the city, days after a PG building collapse claimed seven lives. She also instructed all senior MCD officials to remain present on the ground during the action.
Delhi Government Initiates Safety Measures for PG Accommodations
On September 7, the Delhi government mandated structural audits and safety inspections for Paying Guest (PG) accommodations in key student areas, including Mukherjee Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Satya Niketan, and Saket. Authorities have been instructed to ensure compliance with construction permissions, structural integrity, fire-safety NOCs, and overall building regulations.
In addition to these immediate actions, the Delhi government is drafting a new law, the Paying Guest Accommodation Regulation and Safety Bill, 2026. This proposed legislation aims to make licenses compulsory for PG operators and will likely include provisions for regular structural and fire-safety audits, establish zone-wise rent bands, and create a centralized portal for PG listings.
This initiative follows recent concerns over illegal constructions in the city. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to take action against unlawful building practices, particularly in response to public outcry after the collapse of a PG accommodation in Satya Niketan. Gupta has ordered senior officials from the MCD to oversee these enforcement actions directly.
