This sudden weather change comes as meteorologists indicate that the southwest monsoon is on the verge of withdrawing from northwest India.
Winter Arrives in the Valley with Unanticipated Snowfall
Residents and travelers in the upper reaches of the valley experienced an unexpected arrival of winter as significant snowfall occurred overnight. The slopes surrounding Gulmarg, particularly the areas of Apharwat and Gondola Phase 2, were notably transformed into a picturesque winter landscape. Additionally, the Gurez sector, including the frontier areas of Tulail Valley and Kabuli Gali in Bandipora district, reported fresh layers of snow, further enhancing the winter scenery.
The chill extended across state lines into Himachal Pradesh, where alpine passes recorded crisp temperature drops. Rohtang Pass : The high-altitude Rohtang Pass in Kullu district logged light snow accumulations alongside intermittent rain in towns like Shimla. Monsoon transition : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) notes that atmospheric circulation changes are setting the stage for the monsoon’s formal withdrawal from west Rajasthan around September 19.
Plains precipitation : Lower elevations experienced widespread overnight rain and thunderstorms before the Meteorological Department forecasted clearing skies starting Friday.
