Dubbing the reports of director Prof Shireesh Kedare as fake news, the institute posted that the director has not resigned. Embroiled in student protests over the past few days due to death by suicide of a second-year student, IIT Bombay on Monday denied reports that its director has resigned.
The campus has been witnessing student protests since the death of Sahil Wakode on Friday evening.
His family has alleged that Wakode, a native of Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district, was subjected to institutional harassment and caste-based discrimination before he took the extreme step, which triggered a protest by students on the campus. The protesters claimed that Wakode faced severe pressure and threats of academic suspension.
The demand also included suspension of Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, the Dean of Students Welfare, and no action against the protesters. On Sunday night, the IIT Bombay administration met the protesting students to look into their 18 demands that included ensuring student representation in academic committees, independent investigation into four cases of death by suicide on campus, and mental health workshops for professors.
