Omar Abdullah Calls for Restoration of Statehood Amid Protests
On Friday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah introduced a resolution in the Legislative Assembly demanding the immediate restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory. This move has sparked significant protests from BJP legislators, particularly due to the resolution’s reference to the 2000 autonomy resolution, which remains a contentious issue in the region.
So today we thought that the representation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir is done by the Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir. This resolution that has been brought does not subsume those resolutions. We are not bringing those resolutions for a vote again. The House has already passed them. And they are not ready to vote on statehood. we will hope that the House will vote on this resolution and we will send this resolution to the central government. Sharma added “Bharatiya Janata Party rejects this; I finish my point by stating three things. Second, when the Bharatiya Janata Party had torn up and rejected this resolution of autonomy, wasn’t Omar Abdullah sahib a minister of the NDA at that time? Didn’t he continue at that time with NDA? Sharma also sought clarification from the Congress leadership on its position on the autonomy resolution and Article 370.
