On Friday evening, burdened by personal distress and feeling trapped by decisions made about their lives, two young friends in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi allegedly consumed poison together in an attempt to end their lives. They had grown up together, studied in the same school and shared each other’s joys and worries since childhood.
According to police, Kavita and Sadhana consumed celphos (sulfas) tablets after discussing the difficulties they were facing in their personal lives. Their condition soon worsened.
Sadhana is undergoing treatment and her condition is said to be stable, news agency PTI reported. They informed Kavita’s family, following which both were taken to hospital in an ambulance with the help of the police, PTI reported. However, she died late on Friday night. Police said the two friends bought ‘sulfas’ tablets from the market on Friday.
Their condition soon worsened. Family members rushed both women to hospital. They regularly shared their concerns with each other and had spoken about the problems they were facing. They then returned to Sadhana’s house, where Kavita allegedly consumed two tablets and Sadhana consumed one. Later in the evening, Sadhana’s parents returned home and found the two unconscious.
Due to her critical condition, Kavita was later referred to Varanasi. Because she did not like her husband, she had been staying at her maternal home for the past month. Kavita and Sadhana consumed celphos (sulfas) tablets, a restricted and highly toxic grain fumigant that contains 56% aluminium phosphide, after discussing the difficulties they were facing in their personal lives, according to police. Police said the two had been close friends since childhood and had studied together up to Class 10.
Sadhana and her family members told police that she had been married two months ago against her wishes. Kavita was also distressed as her family had refused to allow her to marry the person she loved, according to police.
