Former India batter Suresh Raina has expressed strong confidence in Mohammed Shami’s chances of returning to the national team, drawing a direct parallel with Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recent recall.

Speaking at the jersey launch of the Indian Soft Ball Cricket League, Raina welcomed the selection, highlighting Kumar’s character and work ethic. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, now 36, has been named in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand, starting October 22, 2026.

Both Kumar and Shami bring experience and different skills – Kumar’s swing and variations, Shami’s raw pace and reverse-swing ability- at a time when India is balancing youth with proven performers. “Making it to the Indian team at the age of 36 shows character. Shami has not played for India since the 2025 Champions Trophy (his last Test was the 2023 World Test Championship final). Raina’s comments add fresh momentum to the debate around India’s pace options, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon and white-ball tours approaching.

He has been a very disciplined bowler and a very process-driven guy who has worked really hard on his body,” Raina said.
