Former Indian captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has been officially appointed as the head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. The 54-year-old Ganguly takes over the reins from Hemang Badani, marking his first stint in the primary head coaching role in franchise cricket.
The announcement cements a new chapter in Ganguly’s long-standing relationship with the franchise. Known for transforming the Indian national team into an aggressive, fearless unit during the early 2000s, Ganguly brings immense tactical acumen and man-management experience directly into the dugout. Over recent seasons, Delhi Capitals have experimented with various combinations and coaching structures in search of consistency. By moving Ganguly from an administrative and advisory role straight into hands-on tactical planning, the Capitals management has signaled a desire for strong, decisive leadership on the ground. Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed Ganguly’s appointment, highlighting his long-standing association with the franchise and his leadership credentials. “Dada is and has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family. “I am excited to see him take on this role and I’m sure that under his guidance and visionary leadership Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to challenge for the IPL title. I cannot wait for all our players and staff to learn from Dada and am looking forward to seeing DC in action at the earliest,” he added. “Dada has been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals journey over the years and has played an important role in strengthening our cricketing structure. His deep understanding of the franchise, coupled with his experience and leadership, will be invaluable as we move forward. We are delighted to have him take charge as Head Coach and look forward to seeing him bring his vision and cricketing expertise to the team. “I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team,” he added. Ganguly’s transition to head coach of Delhi Capitals comes with immediate strategic priorities: Auction & Roster Construction: Ganguly’s primary task will be identifying key balance areas – particularly middle-order firepower and death-bowling depth – ahead of the upcoming auction. DC will look to him to nurture uncapped Indian prospects alongside their core international stars. Ending The Title Drought: Delhi Capitals remain one of the original IPL franchises yet to lift the trophy. Ganguly’s appointment is designed to turn perennial contenders into champions.
Having first joined Delhi Capitals in 2019 as an advisor, the legendary skipper later served as the Director of Cricket across the Capitals ecosystem – overseeing operations for both their men’s and women’s setups. Notably, Delhi Capitals reached their maiden IPL final in 2020 but are yet to win the tournament. Instilling A Fearless Ethos: The 54-year-old’s hallmark as a captain was backing young talent under pressure. With the IPL 2027 season approaching, all eyes will be on how Ganguly’s aggressive philosophy translates to day-to-day tactical execution from the DC dugout.
I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals,” said Jindal in a statement. Delhi Capitals co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi said Ganguly’s familiarity with the franchise’s cricketing structure would be an asset in his new role. We wish him every success as he begins this exciting new chapter with Delhi Capitals,” said Grandhi. Dada Reacts To His Appointment Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly said his familiarity with the franchise and its personnel made the appointment particularly significant. I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me” said Ganguly.
