This development comes amid concerns over the consistent injury breakdown of Indian players, especially those who are centrally contracted by the BCCI. The Centre of Excellence (CoE) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has treated 32 top men’s Indian cricketers over the past year or so, according to a report.
The list of arrivals at the CoE has swelled following the last season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to a report in the Times of India (TOI) .
To address the injury crisis, the BCCI has increased the CoE’s budget by nearly Rs 35 crore to Rs 127 crore for the ongoing financial year. The budget for the previous financial year was Rs 92 crore.
The report added that the BCCI has put renewed focus on its injury management programme at the CoE, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill raising their concerns over the frequent breakdown of players. Top stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, potentially in the fag end of their careers, have also visited the CoE over the past year or so for rehabilitation. A post shared by Rohit Sharma (@rohitsharma45) Jasprit Bumrah , Hardik Pandya , Washington Sundar , Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna are regular arrivals at the CoE, but the report didn’t mention the number of times they’ve had to check in for rehab.
Interestingly, as many as 68 players, across genders, have been treated at the CoE over the past 20 months, with the majority of the injuries being soft-tissue injuries. The last time that the BCCI had to deal with that many soft-tissue injuries was back in 2020-21 during the Covid-19 bubbles. The BCCI recently invited applications for the Sports Science & Medicine (SSM) head for the CoE, a position which has been vacant since June 2025.
Rohit was at the CoE earlier this year for a hamstring injury, while Kohli visited the rehab centre for the first time this year. The only impact-related case was Rishabh Pant , who was treated for a fractured foot sustained during last year’s Manchester Test.
