With Punjab heading for the 2027 assembly elections, the political battle for the youth vote appears to be gaining momentum, with the BJP and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party increasingly using sports and youth outreach as a key part of their political messaging.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to interact with students on August 27 as part of the “Khelo India Samvad” programme on the occasion of National Sports Day. The event, titled “Khel Ki Baat PM Ke Saath”, will connect students and institutions across the country with the Prime Minister.
The Punjab government has maintained that strengthening sports infrastructure and providing better facilities to athletes remains one of its key priorities. The new grounds are being presented as an effort to take sporting facilities closer to villages and provide young people with greater opportunities to participate in sports. the AAP government is showcasing ground-level infrastructure projects and its sports agenda While the BJP is seeking to connect directly with students through the Prime Minister’s interaction.
The party is looking to expand its footprint among younger voters ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, while the AAP government is highlighting its sports infrastructure initiatives as evidence of its governance and youth-focused policies. In the AAP camp, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is set to inaugurate 510 new sports grounds across Punjab on August 24.
He will launch the facilities from Patiala’s Dedna village, with the government projecting the initiative as part of its ongoing “sports revolution” in the state.
As part of the programme, two colleges from every district of Punjab and Haryana are expected to participate. Local sportspersons and elected representatives will also join the interaction, giving the BJP an opportunity to directly engage with students and young voters.
