A 30-year-old pregnant woman, who was working as a senior government official, was found dead at her home in Delhi’s Dwarka, with her family alleging mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws.
Nazia Khanam, an assistant section officer in the Defence Ministry, had married Azam Ali Khan just four months ago on April 11.
However, her family raised questions about her death, suspecting that she was murdered and that there was an attempt to pass the crime off as a suicide. Nazia’s father, Tawab Khan, held her husband responsible for her death and demanded legal action against him. Later, when he tried to enter the room, he found Nazia hanging from the window.
Nazia Khanam, an assistant section officer in the Defence Ministry, had married Azam Ali Khan just four months ago on April 11. On August 21, at around 4 am, Nazia’s family received a call about her death, claiming that she had died by suicide.
She was three months pregnant, officials said. Soon after the wedding, she allegedly told her family that her husband, mother-in-law – Sameen Nisha, and father-in-law – Babar Ali Khan, used to constantly abuse, beat, and threaten her with eviction or even death. Nazia complained about her husband’s behavior several times, but the situation remained unchanged, according to the victim’s family. When the police questioned the victim’s husband, he said that they had an argument following which she locked herself in the room. The police have filed a case, and further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report, family statements, and evidence recovered from the site, officials said.
