India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando were involved in a heated on-field confrontation during the first session of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports club in Colombo on Sunday.
Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva was also seen stepping in to calm the situation, with Jaiswal eventually walking away. Reports have described the incident as physical contact, but it remains for match officials to determine whether any disciplinary offence occurred.
However, there has been no confirmed ICC punishment or ban announced for Jaiswal at the time of writing. The confrontation came moments after Jaiswal had looked in good touch during India’s first innings. Reports have only indicated that the incident could be reviewed by the match referee. Jaiswal’s dismissal was one of two early setbacks for India after the visitors opted to bat first.
Because there was apparent physical contact between the two players, the incident could come under the scrutiny of the match officials, particularly. It would therefore be premature to state that Jaiswal faces a Level 4 charge or a specific suspension unless the match officials formally charge him under the ICC Code of Conduct. The left-handed opener scored 45 off 53 deliveries, hitting nine boundaries. India went into lunch at 88/2, with captain Shubman Gill and Devdutt Padikkal at the crease.
