In NDA-ruled Andhra Pradesh, Opposition YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s intensified criticism of the Election Commission of India (ECI), outreach to Left parties and unconfirmed reports of contacts with Congress leaders, have triggered speculation about a possible shift in his national political strategy ahead of the 2029 elections.
The speculation comes in the backdrop of YSRCP’s earlier support for several key legislative initiatives of the BJP-led NDA government, including the 2023 law governing the appointment of election commissioners.
Jagan Reddy has recently called for restoring the earlier selection mechanism involving the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and Chief Justice of India, arguing that transparency and accountability are essential to public confidence in electoral institutions.
The party’s engagement with Left organisations has added another dimension to the speculation. YSRCP’s participation in broader discussions with Opposition parties has raised the possibility of a closer coordination, though it does not establish a decision to join the INDIA bloc. YSRCP has also raised questions about the conduct of the 2024 Andhra Pradesh elections, citing alleged discrepancies in polling percentages, electronic voting machine (EVM) data, vote counts and delays in releasing election documents. Andhra Pradesh minister Satya Kumar Yadav questioned the party’s objections, pointing to YSRCP’s victories in the 2019 elections and asking why electoral procedures were being challenged after its 2024 defeat.
